Our History:
In the Fall of 2002, a number of Polysomnographic Technologists from several New England states attended a CPAP education seminar in southern New Hampshire. During this seminar an open discussion among all in attendance was generated around the legislative concerns of the Respiratory Care Practice Act that was moving through the NH House of Representatives. Because this act had important ramifications to PSGTs and their ability to practice their trade, it became apparent to all that we needed to take a unified stance. While the APT offered a national support structure, we all felt that it was necessary to have local support as well. A small group of dedicated volunteers got together several times in the Winter of 2003 to plan a course of action. These volunteers became the original Board of Directors of the New England Polysomnographic Society. The first course of action was multifold. We had to create a vision for the organization, find a way to create a membership, and simultaneously work towards defeating the legislation that threatened our jobs. Fortunately, while we had little experience with legislative issues, we had support from the APT and Dr. Mike Sateia. They were instrumental in defeating the legislation as it stood. Since those early days, our organization has grown slowly but steadily. At our first educational conference in Waterville, Maine, Respironics generously donated seed money in the amount of $5,000 to get our organization underway. This has gone a long way to helping us organize and create a sustainable infrastructure. Through our experience in legislative action in New Hampshire, we were able to defeat similar legislation in Vermont. NEPS stands committed to supporting Polysomnographers throughout New England.
